How to choose the best OTF knife

Every knife on this page is an out-the-front automatic: the blade fires straight out of the handle on a slide or switch. Sizes run from 5-inch minis with sub-2-inch blades to 10.5-inch tactical models, and prices from about $13 to about $83. The grid is sorted by what buyers ordered most in the last 30 days, so the top rows are the current best-sellers, not the newest listings. For a ranked list with reasons, read the best OTF knives of 2026.

Pick the size first

Mini (5 to 5.5 inches): keychain and gift knives, blades under 2 inches. See best mini OTF knives. EDC (7 to 8.25 inches): pocket-clip knives with 2.5 to 3.25 inch blades. See best EDC OTF knives. Tactical (8.5 to 10.5 inches): full-grip handles and 3.5 to 4 inch blades. See best tactical OTF knives.

Then the mechanism

Double action fires and retracts on the same slide and closes one-handed. Single action fires on the switch and resets by hand, usually with a stronger deployment. Both are reliable when the handle is tight and the track is clean. The double action ranking explains blade play, reliability and maintenance.

Then the finish

Carbon fiber handles are light and textured, in woven, forged and wrapped versions. Damascus-pattern blades are etched or coated stainless in blue, gold and rainbow. Pink is the best-selling color on the site. OTF karambits put a curved talon blade on a ring handle.

Then the budget

The most-ordered knives on the site are under $20, and the best full-size double actions start at about $33. Best budget OTF knives ranks them by price band.

Before you order

Automatic-knife rules differ by jurisdiction and often by blade length. Read the state-by-state automatic knife guide on Self Defense Supply and check your local rules first. Items ship from Richardson, Texas; out-of-stock products are hidden from this page so everything shown can ship now.
